We focus on engineering and manufacturing complex projects for companies in the aerospace, defense, and space industries. We are looking for a Director of Machine Design to join our growing team.
This position is based in Sedro-Woolley, WA, with flexibility for remote work and occasional travel to Sedro.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
We are looking for an exceptional and highly experienced engineer to lead the Machine Design Team, responsible for the design and construction of our state-of-the-art 5-axis mills. The Director of Machine Design will oversee all aspects of large-scale machine tool design, ensuring seamless integration across mechanical, electrical, facility, and controls systems. This leader will manage multi-million-dollar projects, drive engineering excellence, and mentor the next generation of design engineers.
The following essential job functions are performed as a Director of Machine Design:
- Lead the design and development of world-class, high-precision milling machines and associated facilities
- Oversee all mechanical and facility design elements, ensuring seamless integration with automation and controls systems in collaboration with the Director of Controls and Automation
- Manage multiple, simultaneous large-scale projects (individual projects exceeding $7M, with annual oversight of $15M–$20M in total project value)
- Direct, hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of mechanical design engineers and project managers
- Drive design reviews and guide engineers through complex mechanical design decisions, ensuring robust and innovative solutions
- Improve engineering processes, design tools, and methodologies to advance efficiency, precision, and overall project outcomes
- Ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of production-ready automation and machine tool systems
- Behavior: The incumbent must work well under pressure, meeting and completing multiple deadlines. The incumbent shall, at all times, demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
- Being at work on time and maintaining good attendance is a condition of employment and is an essential function of the job
QUALIFICATIONS
- Due to our ITAR and EAR regulations, applicants must be a US Citizen or of Legal Permanent Resident Status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b (a) (3).
- This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). Janicki will assist with gaining this access once employed. Special Access Program or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position and requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required
- 15+ years of experience in machine tool, large-scale automation, or mechatronics design
- Proven track record as the lead project manager on multiple large-scale engineering projects (budgets of $5M+)
- Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage overlapping projects totaling $15M–$20M annually
- Deep technical expertise in mechanical design and a proven ability to mentor engineers in resolving complex technical challenges
- Strong leadership experience managing engineering teams and delivering mission-critical equipment
- Must have strong communication skills through written, verbal, and graphical mediums in the English language
- Must be willing and able to obtain a government issued security clearance
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Salary range for this role is between $130,000 - $185,000, plus discretionary bonus, 401(k) matching, vacation, and health benefits. Employees can also receive additional pay for off-shifts. The range provided is Janicki’s estimate of the base compensation for this role. Actual amount offered will be based on job-related and non-discriminatory factors such as experience, location, education, training, skills, and abilities
